In the responsum, Human Organ Procurement with NRP, approved by the CJLS on May 5, 2026 by 18-0-5, I considered the permissibility of an emerging protocol for organ donation known as Normothermic Regional Perfusion, or NRP. On the positive side, NRP preserves organs and improves outcomes for organ donations. On the negative, it is unclear if the donor is actually dead at the time of procurement, or if NRP is itself the cause of death. Clarifying the ethics and halakhic permissibility of this protocol is essential for donors and their families as well as recipients of organs to feel confident that the gift of life is not itself the cause of death.
